Prep Your ATV to Hit the Trails this Summer
It's finally summer, and with that comes good times, lots of trails to ride, friends and family to visit — but most importantly — the opportunity to ride your Can-Am offroad ATV in the warm sun!
You grab your helmet and head out the door with a big smile. But wait … STOP! You should do a few things before you turn over your engine.
P.S. Do you have an ATV? If not, search for a Can-Am dealer near me, and you will find Basecamp Motorsports - the answer to all your ATV needs.
This checklist is intended for all Can-Am Off-Road ATV & side by sides regardless of skill level or whether this is your first four-wheeler or not. While hitting the trail without double-checking these points may save a few minutes, it could cost you a lot more in terms of safety and even damage.
Checklist For Your ATV
The first step to a great Can-Am ATV ride is ensuring you've got everything you need. You must ensure that the vehicle is in good condition and ready to go. Check out this checklist for some of the most important things to do before hitting the trails.
Check Fluids
Before heading out on the trails, it's essential to check your ATV's fluids. Start by checking the oil and coolant levels in both the engine and transmission. If they're low, stop by your local dealership before hitting the trail and fill 'em up with fresh fluid.
Coolant
Check the coolant levels in your Can-Am Canada ATV. If it's low, add more as needed. If it's too high, drain some into a container and dispose of it properly — never dump coolant on the ground or into your local water supply.
Air Filter
Check the air filter in your ATV and clean or replace it as necessary. A clogged air filter can cause problems with your engine and cause it to overheat while riding.
Tires
Ensure your tires are correctly inflated and have plenty of treads. The last thing you want is a blowout while traveling high speed on uneven terrain! You can find out how much pressure is recommended for your specific tire size by looking at its sidewall (the side of the tire). If you don't see that information there, check with an expert at Basecamp Motorsports about what kind of pressure works best for your model of ATV.
Fuel
Check the fuel filter and ensure enough gas is in the tank for a few rides. You'll also want to check that all hoses are correctly connected and not leaking.
Nuts and Bolts
Ensure all nuts and bolts are tight, and nothing is loose or rattling around.
Brakes
Check both front and rear brakes to make sure they're working correctly; if not, adjust them so they do.
Clean
Give your ATV a good cleaning inside and out; this includes washing away dirt from every nook and cranny of your machine so nothing gets into places where it shouldn't be (like the engine); use a hose with water pressure set very low; wipe down interior surfaces with mild soap solution made specifically for cleaning ATVs.
Ready To Ride
When the weather warms up, it's time to start thinking about hitting the trails. With that in mind, we've put together a list of items you'll want to have on hand before you hit the road.
Water
There's nothing worse than running out of water during a long ride through the woods, so make sure your machine comes equipped with a large enough capacity to last for multiple hours.
Snacks
Always pack snacks when going on adventures like this because they provide energy and keep your mind focused on what's ahead. It's also important not to eat too much before heading out because that can lead to indigestion when things get rough or if there isn't any food around later in the day.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is crucial when riding an ATV in the summer heat!
GPS
When riding in unfamiliar territory, it's always best to take a GPS or map, so you don't get lost or stuck somewhere off the beaten path. Make sure it has a backlight to see it at night easily.
Safety Gear
Make sure everyone in your party wears a helmet, gloves, and eye protection while riding their ATV!
Partner
Always take someone along with you when riding an ATV because it's safer than riding alone and will give you someone to share memories with afterward!
