A Beginner’s Guide to ATV Maintenance
ATVs or all-terrain vehicles require a significant investment of money. For best performance, you must maintain them in good shape. Before you learn how to operate the quad using proper riding techniques, make sure you buy the right gear to help you keep it in top condition.
Learning how to care for your new ATV properly can save you hours of aggravation and substantial repair costs. Here is a guide on ATV maintenance for beginners:
Pre-ride maintenance
1. Fluid levels: Consistently check the oil, fuel, and coolant to ensure they are at the correct levels. Don't forget to check for leaks in any of the systems.
2. Air filter: Ensure that the ATV’s air filter is adequately clean and oiled. Even brand-new ATVs may not be sufficiently lubricated. If you’re a beginner ATV rider, oiling air filters may be an unfamiliar activity, but it is essential nonetheless.
3. Tire pressure: Make it a part of your regular pre-ride routine, but avoid over-inflating the tire, as it makes them more likely to pop or get damaged.
Regular maintenance
1. Follow the break-in procedure
Avoid riding at full capacity for too long. Also, keep changing the speed regularly for the first ten hours of use. Between the first ten and twenty hours, don’t go over the three-quarter throttle position. It’s not a good idea to go full throttle even during engine reverse. Perform your first oil change after twenty riding hours, and then take your ATV out for the complete riding experience.
2. Oil replacement
The ATV’s engine’s oil collects dirt over time. Replace the unclean oil with a new batch and filter it regularly to keep the engine running smoothly. For a DIY oil change, check the manufacturer’s manual to find details about the recommended oil type and weight.
3. Air filter
Your ATV’s engine only requires three things for proper functioning—gas, spark, and air. As the gas moves from the tank into the fuel system, it mixes with air and turns into an expanding air-fuel mixture. It travels to the cylinders, where a spark ignites the mixture, resulting in the movement of pistons.
For this process to take place flawlessly, you need a steady flow of uncontaminated air into the engine. It’s possible only through a clean and dry air filter. A dusty ride quickly clogs the air filter. Therefore, inspect the air filter closely before you restart the machine.
4. Routine wash
Mud marks on your ATV signal that you’ve had an amazing outdoor time. However, you must wash off the dirt after enjoying the ride as it traps moisture, which can ruin the paint job. The humidity due to trapped moisture can also cause oxidation, which is highly corrosive.
5. Coolant level
Maintaining the coolant level is easy but essential to keep the ATV running in good condition. Check the coolant texture and temperature regularly. An overheating coolant can burn and change its color.
