5 Ways To Keep Your Motorcycle In Top Shape

May. 17 2021 News By Marketing

A motorcycle’s life expectancy can be judged by its mileage and the number of years it has been in use. However, a well-maintained bike can run smoothly even after you have crossed the 100000 km milestone.

Yes, the brand, model, and driving skills make a huge difference. But what matters more is the level of care and maintenance you subject your motorcycle to. If you want your bike to run for 10 to 12 years at the very least, here are five ways to keep it in top shape.

Keep your bike clean

If you want your bike to function as new even after years of use, you must treat it as such.  If dust gets accumulated on the exterior of your motorcycle, it will also get collected in the crevices.

Wiping your motorcycle with a clean wet cloth every day, pressure washing once or twice a month, and cleaning air filters at regular intervals, can go a long way in maintaining your bike’s good health.

Examine the tires

You must often check the air pressure in the tires and their condition to avoid unexpected blowouts. Consult your motorcycle manufacturer about the correct air pressure and use a tire pressure gauge at home for regular inspection. Keep an eye out for tire cuts, scrapes, bulges, irregular wear, and cracks. Tire tread patterns can also help you detect damage and wheel alignment problems.

Check the engine oil

Engine oil lubricates the moving engine parts, reduces friction, and enhances cooling, sealing, and cleaning. High-quality engine oil also increases fuel efficiency.

Inadequate oil level and contaminated oil can cause engine seizures and shortened engine component life. Check your engine oil level, replace it at specified intervals, and regularly examine the bike for leakages to avoid engine damage.

Avoid power outages

If you’re unable to electric-start your fueled-up motorcycle, you must check your battery. Most motorcycles need a battery replacement every 3-5 years. The inability to honk the horn or switch headlights is another sign of a low battery. If you don’t know how to replace a battery, hire a motorcycle mechanic to do the job.

When a motorcycle is unused for an extended period, the battery gets drained. Take your bike for frequent long rides to allow the alternator to charge your battery fully. Old batteries will also need regular water top-up.

Maintain clutch health

Clutch and brake are extensively used motorcycle components. A Clutch is constantly used to shift gears while riding. It wears out the clutch plates and eventually loosens up the clutch lever. Clutch adjustment is essential to ensure free play of the clutch lever and to enjoy a smooth ride. Motorcycle brakes also need to be maintained to prevent them from getting too tight or loose.
